Natural hops offering flavorful brews! Barking Deer. Mumbai.

Natural hobs offering flavorful brews! Barking Deer. Mumbai.

Ever heard of the Flying Pig! Well you will find it at the Barking Deer in Mumbai! Brewed in the traditional Belgian style, the wit bier is the perfect thirst chilled quencher for a toasty warm Mumbai day. It is brewed with 2-row pilsner malt and a large portion of malted wheat. This wheat lends a “tangy” flavour and light palate to the beer, it is full of herbs flavours with the addition of fresh orange peel, coriander seed and cumin. Very refreshingly natural. Straight from the harvest.

I equate this time of year with the cinnamon fruit wines, ginger ales and pumpkin brews, all that the harvest season can bring in before the Thanks giving days. But there’s an entire corner of the beer universe that you will find here right here in Mumbai, that will help you celebrate the harvest all year around.

Make yourself comfortable, relax with the sports channel resounding with cheers and enjoy a laid back atmosphere. You will find the hide out at Lower Parel. With no pretentions, no frills attached and no high end gimmicks, straight to the point, go there to let your hair down and drown your weekends in some good earthy drinks from their very own brewery!

I am no beer drinker, but was invited to share the merriment over the weekend and I was delighted to soak in the chilled ambiance. I did like the Bombay Blond there. No. Of course yes. It is their lightest offering brewed with 2-row pilsner malt and malted wheat, Bombay blonde is both refreshing and crisp. The addition of German and Czech noble hops add to the perfect balance of bitterness and aroma.

The staff are all well trained in their culinary expertise and patiently educate you on the beers hobs and multicross brewing done all in front of you at the bar and beyond. It is said to be Mumbai’s first microbrewery featuring the cities most authentic craft beer, where brewers lovingly brew in the gleaming copper-clad microbrewery set behind the bar.

The Barking Deer served its first craft Beer to the general public on November 7, 2013!!And there has been no looking back. The entrepreneurs behind the concept look like very hard working people who made this a reality in Mumbai. I guess the place does spell culinary passion . Watch beer being crafted for you right before your eyes while you laugh the evening away. Amazing!

Never mind the brews, the miniature tasters offered fill you up, but get a taste of all, if you must. You will find your hob alright.

Do not leave without having the Bacon wrapped chicken, tangy and flavorsome. The little mini pork buns are to die for. The prawns are the freshest in the city. My Irish friends vow by these gourmet offerings so well paired with the brews…. and so will you!

Hic! Hic! Hop! Hop!

So, if you must know-Hops are the flower cones from the hop plant Humulus. They are used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beers, this adds the zest, zing call it what you may,it helps preserve and ferment, many a times its used as herbal medicine, or at least said to be because of their anti bacterial properties. Many different varieties of hops are grown by farmers around the world, with different types being used for particular styles of beer. Hops add the sweetness and varied flavours got from various flowering hops. So much for natures offerings!
